Counseling

I was trained as a generalist, which means that I work with a wide range of people and concerns, although my practice tends to focus on individual counseling with adults. Within this generalist framework, I work most often with issues related to:

  • depression

  • anxiety

  • grief and loss

  • family of origin

  • developmental and life transitions

  • intersectionality and integrating multiple social identities

  • cross cultural and intercultural communication

  • race-based traumatic stress (RBTS)

I see counseling as a collaborative effort and I practice from an approach that integrates interpersonal, multicultural, feminist, and psychodynamic theoretical orientations. Practically speaking, this means that I view the foundation of successful therapy as really seeing you and your situation, establishing a relationship where you feel understood, and then determining the best way to address your concerns. I try to create a safe space to explore what is causing you distress and work with you to make connections between the past and your current situation. We then work together formulate a vision and solutions that utilize the strengths that you currently possess.

Scheduling an Appointment - You can call me at (217) 649-5433 or send me an email at teresa@drteresamok.com. We can then schedule time to talk for 10-15 minutes, where you'll be able to talk about what's causing you to seek counseling now and ask me any questions you might have. I'll be able to give you an overview of how I work and we can evaluate the fit in terms of how productively we might work together.

Sessions are 55 minutes long, and my rate is $150 per session. Many insurance companies reimburse for my services, including student insurance at the University of Illinois. I am on the provider panel for Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO. Please contact your insurance company directly before we meet to determine what coverage you have, as well as any deductible and copay you will need to pay.

If you need to cancel a session, please allow at least 24 hours advanced notice. If you do not show up, you will be responsible for the full session fee; insurance companies will not reimburse for missed sessions.
